Post image for Harvest Monday

After skipping a week because I was cleaning up and recovering from the storm I am back with this week’s harvests. They were pretty good, I was especially happy with the first tomatoes of the season!

Shallots - Cleaned up this was a little more than 2 lbs

Nice Kohlrabi

A couple little turnips

First Tomatoes - Rutgers. Almost the last of the broccoli.

Big Haul on Saturday - first globe eggplant, nice bunch of peppers and assorted other goodies!

Total for the week, about 14 lbs.

Total for the year about 46 lbs.  That’s 20 lbs ahead of last year at this point. I expect  last year will surge ahead for a time because of all the cucumbers I had.

I have tried many times to grow turnips, but they always get attacked by everything that moves, so I have now given up, and go for kohlrabi instead. For some reason kohlrabi seems to be much less attractive to the beasties. How come you have ripe tomatoes so soon? It seems like only the other day that you reported that they were a long way behind mine.

I agree the kohlrabi do seem a bit more resistant, even the foliage. I think the high heat we’re having is pushing the tomatoes, chillis and eggplants. I have one globe eggplant that currently has 4 fruit on it, I’ve never had that sort of success.

I cannot grow turnips for the life of me. Either I get all tops and no roots, or I get root that is completely ravished by wire worms. I’ve never tried kohlrabi, but the wire worms seem to go for any white root.

I’m so happy your garden wasn’t in completer ruin from the storm, and that you’re able to harvest so much this week!

The kohlrabi bulb forms above ground so perhaps it would work for you?

I’m glad as well, really the storm didn’t cause much damage at all to the garden. Happy about that, though the tree situation is quite sad. This end of the block used to have such pretty dappled shade on the street, and now it is harsh sunlight.

Such a harvest, David! Considering the events of the past few weeks, from trees falling to temperatures soaring, your garden is doing quite well. The fact that you’re 20 lbs over the harvest of one year ago is truly remarkable. Good for you!

I’m pretty surprised at the progress. I did double the size of the beds and if I double production I’ll be happy but only time will tell!

Norma Chang July 16, 2012 at 6:50 pm

Sure wish my tomatoes will hurry up and produce. Nice harvest.

Thank you Norma! The heat is helping move things along. I slid over to your place – lovely blog!

Great harvest! Those shallots look fabulous.

Thanks Agriburbia (LOVE the name!) I am pretty happy with them though this years shallot harvest is a little smaller than last year.

Really nice looking harvests! I’ll be planting turnips and such soon. They go almost straight to bolt planted in spring.

David Offutt July 17, 2012 at 5:18 am

These are doing OK, I don’t plant many – many 2-3 square feet. I love the greens!

Great harvest, and a really good variety! We are waiting on our summer crops to start coming on so we are a little shy on variety, just potatoes and a few early tomatoes.

David Offutt July 17, 2012 at 5:20 am

Thank you! Some variety here. The peppers should really start popping soon!

kitsapFG July 16, 2012 at 10:50 pm

Hurrah for the first tomatoes! It really is a reason to celebrate. I am jealous of those peppers. I have some bell peppers growing well in my greenhouse but the rest of the peppers are justting getting going.

David Offutt July 17, 2012 at 5:21 am

First tomatoes are always exciting! The heat here is really pushing the peppers!

Michelle July 17, 2012 at 11:29 am

Good looking harvests. I wish I had some ripe tomatoes from my garden but they are weeks away still.

David Offutt July 17, 2012 at 7:08 pm

Hi Michelle, these came on very quickly and now I suspect they will continue for a while.
